Tips For Staying Safe on Fourth Of July Weekend

July 4th weekend is right around the corner, and many people have plans for celebration. Food, friends, family, fireworks…it is all so exciting!

However, the Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous days on the road due to the number of drunk driving incidents. Last year, Utah State Troopers made nearly 3,000 traffic stops from July 3rd to July 5th.

Ensure that you don’t find yourself injured, or arrested, this weekend by putting a plan in place for how to stay safe.

Have a Designated Driver

Choose someone from your group to remain sober during the festivities so that they can safely transport everyone back home at the end of the night.
Ensure that whoever is the assigned ‘DD’ will not change their mind midway through the day and start drinking.

Use Uber or Lyft

Uber and Lyft have made it incredibly easy to get a ride on-demand. Download rideshare apps before heading to your party so that they are easy to access once you decide it’s time to go.

Sometimes, these companies offer promotions for cheaper or free rides during holiday weekends to combat drunk driving. Keep a lookout for any discount codes you may be able to find online.

Sleep at the Party

Planning to sleep at the party ahead of time prevents any anxiety about how you will get home. Check with the hosts to see if there is room for you to stay the night. That way, you won’t feel pressure to get behind the wheel before you are sober.

Host the Party

If you have space at your home for your friends and/or family, invite them over. This way, you won’t have any stress about traveling after drinking - just a little extra clean-up in the morning!

Focus on the Road

If you are staying sober on this Fourth of July weekend, ensure that you keep your focus on the road. Even though you are sober, there is the chance that the other drivers are not.

Avoid fiddling with navigation apps, music, or other distractions. Stay alert!
